Massachusetts Maritime Academy Job Fair

Over 250 Cadets Attended the Job Fair at Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday, April 7, 2007!

Two MOTN companies particpated in the April 11 Spring Job Fair at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Over 250 eager cadets and alumni attended the event where 80 companies recruited for new positions.

Comments from Chip Ryther, CR Environmental and MOTN board member:
"I had a good time at the MMA job fair. The thing I took away from the event is how much energy and enthusiasm these kids have. The students coming out with that Environmental safety degree are well suited for our industry. They have the boating experience but they are also learning practical skills such as performing bathymetric surveys and have GIS experienced. They are also OHSA Health & Safety Trained. Eric Steele was one of first graduates from this program. Look at what a great employee he turned out to be for us.I think MOTN really blew it not having a bigger presence here. Every organization needs a some student membership to help bring some new energy."

Maggie Merrill's Comments:
"It is always a joy to meet new faces and young ones at that, and smart ones! These cadets are ready to work and they are trained to work. I heard that 95% of the graduating seniors are fully employed after leaving the academy. Their career services crew is tops! I would recommend attending these in future years. The students tend to be local, so they are very interested in working for New England and Massachusetts companies.

There is no doubt that if the ocean science field and industry is to grow to meet the challenges of the future, we must focus on new hires. It takes a bit more time to train some one new, but the time will be well spent when that new person brings so much to the job. I would ask most of us in the marine field to stop corporate raiding because it's easier than hiring someone new to the biz and training them.

Until the next job fair!
